Overview
This article contains instructions for any Binghamton University faculty, staff, or students that would like to connect to the Binghamton University VPN using the Ivanti Secure Access (formerly Pulse Secure) VPN client program on a Windows or Mac computer.
Establishing a VPN connection is the first step in connecting to the BingView service, or remotely connecting to office computer resources (i.e. a department's shared network drive, an H drive, a U drive, Banner, etc...) from anywhere outside of the Binghamton University campus. Connecting to the VPN, in essence, makes a computer act as though it's connected to the wired Binghamton University network for university-related websites and services.
Windows Instructions

If you need to install or upgrade the Ivanti Secure Access VPN client program, then this section is for you. It gives steps to download and install that program - this is the same process for upgrading a currently-installed Ivanti Secure Access program, as it is for installing Ivanti Secure Access for the first time.
***IMPORTANT***: If you haven’t yet set up your Binghamton University two-factor authentication (2FA) account yet, then please go through the instructions at the following link before anything: https://www.binghamton.edu/its/two-fa/index.html
- Visit Binghamton University's SSL website at:
https://ssl.binghamton.edu/
- If you see a “Pre Sign-In Notification” page, review the material, and click “Proceed”
- In the ‘Domain’ field, select “BU Domain Users”
- Log in with your BU Domain username and password.
This should open a new page asking for a authentication code.
- This is where two-factor authentication (2FA) comes in, and it can be tricky.
Open whatever you set up for 2FA earlier on – either a smartphone app or web browser add-on (example images below) – and look for the automatically generated six-digit code.
NOTE: The 2FA codes change every 30 seconds. If your 2FA code doesn't work, or if you need to reset your 2FA account, please contact the ITS Help Desk with the contact options at the bottom of this page
- Enter your six-digit 2FA authentication code and click “Sign In”
- Click the "Ivanti Secure Access Client for Windows" link
This should open a new window.
- Click the most recent file that best fits your operating system (usually the general "64bit" file for most people).
NOTE: The vast majority of computers manufactured after 2012 are 64-bit, but if you run into any errors later on that mention 32-bit or "ARM," then come back to this step and download the appropriate file.
The dates in the screenshot below may differ from what you see, and that's OK.
This should download the Ivanti Secure Access installer.
- Open the downloaded file.
The setup wizard should start up automatically when you open the downloaded file.
- When the setup wizard opens, click the “Next” button on the first screen, then "Install" on the second screen
- If Windows asks to allow the program to run, click “Yes”
NOTE: Windows might also ask you to close specific programs during the installation. If so, save any work in the specified program, and then press any continue or retry button you see.
- Let the installation complete, and click “Finish”
- With Ivanti Secure Access installed, and if this is first time you've used Ivanti Secure Access, move on to “Open Ivanti Secure Access For the First Time (Establish your VPN Connection)”
If you're just upgrading Ivanti Secure Access, feel free to end here.
Open Ivanti Secure Access for the First Time (Start a VPN Connection)
Once you've installed Ivanti Secure Access, you're ready to make your connection to the Binghamton University VPN. This section gives steps to establish that first VPN connection
***IMPORTANT***: If you haven’t yet set up your Binghamton University two-factor authentication (2FA) account yet, then please go through the instructions at the following link before anything: https://www.binghamton.edu/its/two-fa/index.html
- At the bottom of your computer screen, click the Windows icon to open your list of programs and scroll down to the “P” section
WINDOWS 11 NOTE: If you're using Windows 11, after you click the Windows icon, you may need to the click the "All apps" button to see the list of programs
- Click the folder for “Pulse Secure,” then click the “Ivanti Secure Access Client” icon
- When Ivanti Secure Access opens, click the plus (+) icon to start setting up your connection
- In the “Name:” field, type anything you’d like
We enter “Binghamton University VPN” in our example in the next step.
- In the “Server URL” field, type:
ssl.binghamton.edu
- Click the “Add” button
This brings you back to the previous window, but it now gives you a starting point in Ivanti Secure Access to use in the future
- Click the “Connect” button next to the connection you just named
This should open a new window.
- If you see a “Pre Sign-In Notification” page, review the material, and click “Proceed”
- Select the “BU Domain Users” realm
- If you’d like to make things easier in the future, click the “Save settings” box to fill it in
- Click the “Connect” button
This should open a new window
- Enter your BU Domain username and password
- If you’d like to make things easier in the future, click the “Save settings” box to fill it in
- Click the “Connect” button
This should open a new authentication prompt window.

Open whatever you set up for 2FA earlier on – either a smartphone app or web browser add-on – and look for the automatically generated six-digit code.

- After some brief processing, make sure Ivanti Secure Access says that you’re connected
If you don’t get connected, please try to connect again, and/or contact the ITS Help Desk for assistance.
Open Ivanti Secure Access for the Second+ Time
If you've already installed Ivanti Secure Access or the previous version of the program (Pulse Secure), connected to the Binghamton University VPN in the past, and you're just looking for a refresher on where to open Ivanti Secure Access - or find out what to do if you still have Pulse Secure installed - this section is for you.

- At the bottom of your computer screen, click the Windows icon to open your list of programs and scroll down to the “P” section
WINDOWS 11 NOTE: If you're using Windows 11, after you click the Windows icon, you may need to the click the "All apps" button to see this list of programs.
- Click the folder for “Pulse Secure”
NOTE: Even though the folder may still say Pulse Secure, the program within that folder should say Ivanti Secure Access.

On the other hand, if you see a "Pulse Secure" program icon, please upgrade the program using the instructions in the "Install/Upgrade Ivanti Secure Access" earlier on this website. |

- IF you are asked for a domain, select the “BU Domain Users” realm and click the "Connect" button
- IF you are asked for credentials, enter your BU Domain username and password and click the "Connect" button
This should open a new authentication prompt window.

If you need to install or upgrade the Ivanti Secure Access VPN client program, then this section is for you. It gives steps to download and install that program - this is the same process for upgrading a currently-installed Ivanti Secure Access program, as it is for installing Ivanti Secure Access for the first time.

- Enter your six-digit 2FA authentication code and click “Sign In”
- Click the "Ivanti Secure Access Client for Mac" link
This should open a new window.
- Click the most recent .dmg file that should start with “mac-“
The dates, and the numbers at the end of the file's name in the screenshot below may differ from what you see, and that's OK.
NOTE: If you're prompted to allow downloads from ssl.binghamton.edu, please click "Allow."
This should download the Ivanti Secure Access installer.
- Open the downloaded file.
The should open the Downloads folder or start the installer.
- If you see a .pkg file, double-click it to start the installer
NOTE: Even though the program is now called Ivanti Secure Access, the .pkg file may still mention Pulse Secure, and that's ok.
- When the setup wizard opens, click the “Continue” button on the first screen, then "Install" on the second screen
- If your Mac asks for your permission to install, enter the username and password you use to log on to this computer, and click “Install Software”
NOTE: On some versions of the Mac OS X, you might run into an error here saying that this program is not permitted, and you're not given options to install anyway. If this happens, and you’re stuck at this point, please contact the ITS Help Desk.
- Let the installation complete, and click “Close”
If prompted, you can move the .pkg file to the trash.
- With Ivanti Secure Access installed, and if this is first time you've used Ivanti Secure Access, move on to “Open Ivanti Secure Access For the First Time (Establish your VPN Connection)”
If you're just upgrading Ivanti Secure Access, feel free to end here.
Open Ivanti Secure Access for the First Time (Start a VPN Connection)
Once you've installed Ivanti Secure Access, you're ready to make your connection to the Binghamton University VPN. This section gives steps to establish that first VPN connection
***IMPORTANT***: If you haven’t yet set up your Binghamton University two-factor authentication (2FA) account yet, then please go through the instructions at the following link before anything: https://www.binghamton.edu/its/two-fa/index.html
- Ivanti Secure Access should already be open, but if it's not, you can open it manually by clicking the Finder program, selecting Applications, and then double-clicking "Ivanti Secure Access."
- When Ivanti Secure Access opens, click the plus (+) icon to start setting up your connection
- In the “Name:” field, type anything you’d like
We enter “Binghamton University VPN” in our example in the next step.
- In the “Server URL” field, type:
ssl.binghamton.edu
- Click the “Add” button
This brings you back to the previous window, but it now gives you a starting point in Ivanti to use in the future.
- Click the “Connect” button next to the connection you just named
This should open a new window.
- If you see a “Pre Sign-In Notification” page, review the material, and click “Proceed”
- Select the “BU Domain Users” realm
- If you’d like to make things easier in the future, click the “Save settings” box to fill it in
- Click the “Connect” button
