Apple Mail App on iPhone or iPad does not receive new messages after 2-Step Verification enabled

Overview

The iOS Mail App (the blue icon with the white envelope) displays a password error or just stops receiving messages after setting up 2-Step Verification for Binghamton University Google accounts.

To solve this problem, delete the Binghamton email account on the iPhone or iPad and add it again.

Delete and Add Binghamton email account in iOS Mail App

On your iPhone, go to:

  1. Settings - Mail (the blue icon with the white envelope)- Accounts.

  2. Look for your Binghamton email account in the list of Accounts if you have multiple accounts. Select the account, then select the red text for "Delete Account". If it asks you to confirm it, just confirm the delete. (At this point, it may just appear to be hung up and not deleting. If the process does not complete after a minute or so, just exit the Settings app. You may need to return to your home screen and then view all of your open apps and swipe it off screen to exit.)

  3. If it completes successfully or if you have to exit, return to Settings - Mail - Accounts and select Add Account

  4. The first screen will ask you to select the type of account so select Google.

  5. The iPhone will tell you that Settings wants to use google.com to sign in. Click Continue.

  6. You will be switched to your web browser and a sign in page where you can enter your email address (be sure to include the @binghamton.edu), your password and the 2-Step Verification if needed. If you are already signed in on the iPhone, you may just have to provide your password.

  7. You can then select if you want Mail,  Contacts, Calendars and Notes added to the Mail App or not by using a toggle switch for each option. Click Save after selecting those options.

  8. Return to your device home screen and select the Mail App and your messages should start loading again.

The screenshots below illustrate the process on an iPad:

Go to Settings:

Select Mail then Accounts

Select your Binghamton email account (the name will be whatever you named it when you added it to your device)

Select Delete Account

Confirm to Delete from iPhone or iPad

If you just see a spinning circle for longer than a minute, exit the Settings App by viewing all open apps and swiping the Settings app off the screen:

Return to Settings - Mail - Add Account

Select Google

Select Continue to Sign in

Sign in or choose an account as promptedSelect Continue to Sign in

Select the options for Mail, Contacts, Calendars and Notes as you prefer, then click Save

Return to your device home screen and open the Mail App. Confirm that you are receiving new messages.
