Essential Tech Steps for New Graduates

Overview

Are you graduating soon? Wondering how you keep your email? This knowledge base article explains everything you need to know & steps to take prior/after graduation.

Retaining Your Email

Good news! Starting on May 2025, all graduating students automatically retain their Binghamton email account! Keep in mind that you must sign into your email at least once within a 2-year period or your account will be deleted for inactivity (Note Remaining logged in on your phone does not count as activity; you must log in fresh from a web browser or device)

All your student account access/data is removed and deleted 6 months from when your degree is conferred (This includes your Google Drive) so review the other steps below to ensure you have all your data!

Backing up Your Google Drive/ Microsoft OneDrive Files

  • Google Drive
    • Google offers a service called Google Takeout that allows you to backup/download your data. See our knowledge base article on how to use Google Takeout
  • Microsoft OneDrive
    • To backup your files, you will need to copy them to either your computer or an external drive

Download Your Unofficial Transcript

BU Brain is one of the student systems you will lose access to after the 6-month grace period from your degree conferral date. Before you lose access, we suggest downloading a copy of your unofficial transcript:

  1.  Log into BU Brain
  2. Under the Registrar Services card, select the view unofficial transcript option

unofficial transcript option under the registrar services card in BU Brain

  1. Click Print to either save the document as a PDF or print the transcript
