Overview
To make our email accounts more secure, Binghamton University requires Google 2-step verification to be enabled. There is an initial enrollment deadline of 30 days which if not done, will block a user from signing into Bmail on new devices/login sessions.
If the deadline has passed, you'll need a backup code to sign in and set up 2-step verification. Follow the instructions below on how to generate a backup code for your Bmail account.
Are you an Alumnus? To generate your backup code, please go to B-connected and sign in. Once logged in to B-connected, you will be able to click on "Binghamton Email" in the green menu box, then in the Binghamton University Email section click on the Request Google 2-Step Backup Code button. For assistance signing into B-connected, please contact the Alumni Center at (607) 777-2424 or email bconnect@binghamton.edu
NOTE: Google 2-step verification is separate from 2-factor authentication (Your one-time password) which is used to access various Binghamton University websites (such as my.binghamton.edu, BU Brain, etc…).
Instructions
- Go to https://password.binghamton.edu and select the option "I need a Google 2-Step backup code"
- Type your Binghamton University username in the "Username" field.
NOTE: In the example below, "jdoe" is the example username. Be sure to enter your own username. Click Submit.

- The "Contacts" box will display your alternate email or wireless phone number on file with Binghamton University. Click on the arrow on the right side of the box to see all of your contact options.
- Select your preferred contact and click the "Request Security Code" button.

NOTE: If none of the contacts are valid, select the "I Can't Access These Contacts" button and follow the instructions for reaching out to the Help Desk for assistance. Call or email the Help Desk (607-777-6420 or
helpdesk@binghamton.edu) as instructed if no Contacts are listed for you. Be prepared to email a picture of a photo ID to verify your identity (Please redact all information on the photo besides your name, DOB, and picture).
- Check your email or phone for the Security Code and enter it in the box provided on the password web page and click Submit (See image below for an example of what the email looks like).
NOTE: Not receiving an email message in your inbox? Make sure to check any junk/spam folders.

- Once logged into the portal, click the Request Google 2-Step Backup Code button

- Enter your date of birth in the provided field (Include the slashes and the full year)

- After a few moments, your 8-digit backup code will display
NOTE: The backup code is single use only!
- In a new web browser tab or device, go to http://bmail.binghamton.edu
- Enter your Binghamton username and password in the fields provided
- You now should be prompted to enter the 8-digit backup code you generated and then click Next
NOTE: You may be prompted with several default options for 2-Step Verification. If none of those options are available to you, select "Try Another Way"

- You should now be all logged in!
- To avoid getting locked out again, you must enroll in 2-Step Verification (See our knowledge base instructions on how to do this). The backup code only works once, so you'll want to make sure you have Google 2-Step Verification properly set up for the next time you need to log in to Google.
If you would like assistance, please feel free to contact the Binghamton University ITS Help Desk at 607-777-6420 or Submit a Request, and we'll be happy to help.
