Google Secondary Calendar Management

Body

Overview

In January 2026, Google changed how secondary calendar management works in Google Workspace. Each secondary calendar now has one designated owner. Secondary calendars are linked to the owner and can be transferred to a different owner when an employee leaves their position. If the employee leaves and their Binghamton University Google account is deleted, the secondary calendars they owned are also deleted.

What is a secondary calendar?

A secondary calendar is any calendar that you create or a group calendar that is shared with you. The calendar address ends with @group.calendar.google.com in the Calendar Settings under Calendar ID in the Integrate Calendar section. If a calendar address is in the format username@binghamton.edu or mydepartment@binghamton.edu it is the primary calendar for that Google user account, not a secondary calendar.

What account owns a secondary calendar?

Each secondary calendar has a single, dedicated owner. When a new secondary calendar is created, the creator is the calendar owner. For secondary calendars created prior to 2026, an owner has been automatically assigned by Google based on past usage. Binghamton University Information Technology Services recommends checking your secondary calendars to make sure that the correct owner has been assigned by following these instructions.

How do I transfer a calendar to a different owner?

Users can transfer ownership of a secondary calendar they own to someone else at Binghamton University by following these instructions.

What if the account of a secondary calendar owner is deleted?

If a Binghamton University Google Workspace account is deleted, the secondary calendars they own are also deleted. For critical secondary calendars in your department or group, be sure that calendar owners who leave the department or leave Binghamton University transfer their secondary calendars before leaving.
