Overview

Microsoft Defender for Endpoint helps protect your computer from malware, unsafe websites, and other security risks. When it takes action, you’ll see notifications on your device or in email. This guide shows the most common messages and what you should do. 

When Defender for Endpoint is Activated

As Defender for Endpoint takes over for Anti-Virus protection, you may see a pop-up from Windows Security informing you that Virus Protection is turned off. This is due to Defender turning off and taking over for the previous Endpoint Protection software, Carbon Black. Virus Protection is enabled and working properly.

What it might look like:

What You Should Do:

  • Virus Protection is functioning normally. No action is required.
    • How to check if Microsoft Defender for Endpoint is running:
      1. Open the Windows Security Center by going to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Security.
      2. Look at Virus & Threat Protection.
      3. If a green check mark is visible and no action is needed then Endpoint Protection is working.

When a File or App is Blocked

You may see a pop-up notification in the bottom-right corner of your screen from Windows Security or Microsoft Defender Anti-Virus.

What You Should Do:

  • If you don’t recognize the file: No action is required – Defender has already protected you. 
  • If you believe the blocked file or app is legitimate and needed for work: Contact the IT Help Desk before trying again.

When a Website is Blocked

If you go to a website that is unsafe or not allowed by campus policy, you may see a block page in your browser and/or a notification.

What You Should Do:

  • If you were just browsing: Close the tab and use another trusted site.
  • If you need that site for your job or coursework: Note the site address (URL) and contact the IT Help Desk.
